The exhibition “Isabel(le) x2” brought together the distinctive practices of Isabel Backman Cashman and Isabelle de Brito in a compelling joint presentation at Hornstulls Bodega. The show was an invitation to viewers to navigate a shared space – a journey through colour and form – where the two artists explored the boundaries of the human experience, the emotional interior, and the surreal exterior.
The works, though moving in different directions, found cohesion in their raw, emotional intensity and their drive to render the intangible aspects of consciousness into physical form.
Artistic Dialogue
Isabel Backman Cashman presented figurative works defined by their hypnotic intensity and a hauntingly familiar surrealist tone. Rooted in psychological themes, her paintings explored desolate landscapes—both physical and emotional—where solitary figures hovered in a space between reality and fantasy. Through bold colour, high contrast, and deep shadows, Cashman conveyed a sense of melancholic seclusion, turning introspection into powerful visual storytelling. The exhibition included several of her iconic pieces that encapsulate the essence of her unique artistry.
Isabelle de Brito exhibited large-scale acrylic paintings defined by an intense, artificial palette. Her practice focused on transforming powerful emotional experiences and subtle inner states into a visual language that balanced the raw and the dreamlike. By placing abstraction and figuration at the borderland of reality and fantasy, de Brito challenged perceptions of form and human presence. Notable works included the triptych from the series ‘From the transcript,‘ which translated a tumultuous love story into a visual narrative about crucial, defining moments.
The exhibition successfully merged Cashman’s focused, psychological figuration with de Brito’s expansive, emotional abstraction, creating a rich visual conversation for visitors to explore over the three-month period.
